What Is a Dental Crown?
Essentially, a dental crown is a tooth-shaped cap. Each one is precisely crafted to fit over the top of a broken or weakened tooth, encapsulating the entire visible surface. This holds the tooth together to strengthen it and keep the damage from getting worse. It also shields the compromised tooth from any further damage, decay, or infection. What’s more, it can be used to completely transform the appearance of a tooth to address cosmetic flaws like chips, discoloration, or an odd shape. While dental crowns can be made of many different types of materials, the most common is porcelain. Dental porcelain is well-known for how much it looks like natural tooth enamel and its durability.
The Process of Getting a Dental Crown
In most cases, it only takes two appointments to repair a tooth with a dental crown. During your first appointment, one of our dentists will prepare your tooth for the crown by removing a thin layer of enamel. Once there’s enough room for the crown to fit comfortably, impressions are taken of the area and sent to a dental lab where they’ll be used to fabricate your restoration. You’ll wear a temporary crown for a few weeks until your permanent one has been made. Then, you’ll return to our office and we’ll remove the temporary crown. Your 100% custom-made porcelain dental crown will be bonded into place with a strong dental cement and we’ll check to make sure that your bite feels comfortable. Before you know it, you’ll be walking out of our office with a beautifully repaired smile!
