October is an exciting time of year—the cooler autumn weather finally begins to set in, Halloween is right around the corner, and all month long it’s Dental Hygiene Month! This means that while you’re settling into arguably the best time of the year, there’s plenty to do in regard to your pearly whites. Continue reading below to learn a little more about a few useful habits you should consider adopting this Dental Hygiene Month in order to maintain a healthy and radiant smile!
Brush Correctly & Frequently
The cornerstone of any good oral hygiene routine is regular brushing. If you haven’t already, you should make it a habit to brush your teeth at least twice a day, generally once in the morning and once before bedtime. Use fluoride toothpaste and a soft-bristled toothbrush for this, and also use the correct brushing motion. Brushing removes plaque and bacteria before it has the chance to harden to tartar, which your dentist will have to remove—and which also increases the risk of tooth decay and gum disease. Don’t forget to brush your tongue, too!
Flossing Is Just as Important as Brushing
Flossing is as vital as brushing, yet it’s a step that many people tend to forget or neglect entirely! Dental floss reaches the spaces between your teeth and gums, which your toothbrush doesn’t have clear access to. By flossing daily, you can remove much of the plaque that’s responsible for cavities and gum disease. Flossing is also made easier by varieties such as dental floss sticks and oral irrigators, both of which can get the job done with easier maneuverability.
Be Mindful of Your Diet
It goes without saying that every single item you eat or drink has a profound impact on your oral health, meaning that it’s in your best interest to be mindful of your diet. Limit sugary and acidic foods and beverages, as they can erode tooth enamel and lead to cavities—though this might be tough to do during Halloween, your smile will thank you! Instead, opt for a balanced diet that’s rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and lean proteins. And don’t forget to drink plenty of water; it’s far and away the best beverage for your teeth and gums, and it’s especially beneficial after meals when you might not be able to brush your teeth immediately.
In addition to the above, regular dental checkups are crucial for maintaining a healthy and beautiful smile—during Dental Hygiene Month and beyond!
